THE EARLY DAYS AT DEER VALLEY

Georgia recalls starting at Deer Valley in 1981, just months before the resort opened. Growing up in Salt Lake and having a passion for skiing, she applied and was initially hired as an accounting clerk. However, a position opened as an assistant to the personnel director, which Georgia accepted. She was one of the first hundred staff members, joining a team dedicated to building a unique and luxurious ski resort experience.

A VISIONARY APPROACH TO HOSPITALITY
Georgia reflects on Edgar and Polly Sterns' vision to build a ski resort formulated like a fine hotel. Under the guidance of leaders like Jim Nassikas, the resort aimed to set a new standard by integrating hospitality concepts usually reserved for high-end hotels. Every aspect, down to ski instructors' boot colors, was carefully considered. This attention to detail set Deer Valley apart, creating a unique, refined culture that was warm, genuine, and service-oriented.

THE INFLUENCE OF ICONIC FIGURES
Georgia credits Deer Valley's culture to the visionaries behind it, including Polly Stern, whose high standards inspired the “Polly Test.” This informal benchmark, asking, "Would Polly approve?" became a guide for quality and class throughout Deer Valley's operations. This understated elegance and attention to detail have remained integral to the Deer Valley experience, creating a welcoming environment for every guest, regardless of background.

THE TRANSITION FROM HUMAN RESOURCES TO RETAIL
Later in her career, Georgia shifted from human resources to retail, where she found new excitement. She viewed the Deer Valley logo as an iconic brand, and the opportunity to oversee retail and licensing was a privilege. Her leadership in developing the Legacy Collection—a special collection that pays tribute to Deer Valley’s rich history and the Stern family legacy, featuring the classic sweater pattern originally knitted by Stein Eriksen’s mother—underscores her commitment to preserving the resort's heritage.

A LEGACY OF LOYALTY
Georgia’s career spanned 43 years and several roles, with her ultimately becoming a champion of the resort's culture. She notes the deep dedication among Deer Valley staff and the strong sense of community and care for one another. Even after stepping back, Georgia continues marvel at the impressive work and commitment that keeps the resort’s standards exceptionally high.

THE FUTURE OF DEER VALLEY
Looking ahead, Georgia expresses excitement about Deer Valley’s plans to open new terrain and lifts sooner than expected, a testament to the team’s dedication. Although no longer with the resort full-time, Georgia still considers herself part of the Deer Valley family, continuously supporting its mission and staying connected to the team’s efforts.
