Celebrating Unity, Art, and Skiing
Commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend at Deer Valley
Published January 16, 2025
This Martin Luther King Jr. weekend marks not only a popular time for skiing and creating cherished memories with loved ones but also a moment to reflect on the profound significance of this holiday. While we enjoy this long weekend on the slopes, we remember why it exists—to honor the enduring values Dr. King stood for: equality, unity, and the pursuit of a brighter future for all. At Deer Valley, the slopes become a place where people come together, sharing the joy of skiing and the beauty of Utah's Wasatch Mountains.
As you carve turns through perfect corduroy this weekend, we encourage you to take a moment to experience the inspiring Burns Reimagined art installations around the mountain. This project celebrates the unique character and culture of Deer Valley through partnerships with five diverse, sustainably minded local artists, who transformed upcycled chairs from the retired Burns chairlift into stunning works of art.
Among these masterpieces is a chair designed by Park City-based artist Lamont Joseph White, displayed at the top of the Jordanelle Gondola. Lamont’s work thematically emphasizes inclusion, urging us to recognize and celebrate our differences as a way to create opportunity and foster understanding. His piece serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and belonging in mountain culture. Please visit Lamont’s featured chairlift and share your photos!
